Missing teeth can be frustrating for a lot of reasons. Eating becomes difficult and sometimes painful. It can become hard to pronounce words correctly. Your oral health can suffer further degradation. It can be embarrassing to know that every time you smile or hold a conversation with someone, they can see that you are missing teeth. It is very important to your oral health that you replace teeth that are lost as soon as possible. At Anthony Leite Dentistry, we proudly offer the best form of tooth replacement available on the market today – dental implants.
What is a dental implant?
Dental implants are a permanent dental prosthetic that allows us to replace lost teeth. They consist of three parts – post, abutment, and crown. They allow us to replace single teeth, several consecutive teeth in a row (bridge), and even full arches of teeth. All this while stimulating the bone and soft tissues in exactly the ways that your natural teeth would.
Receiving a Dental Implant
The process for receiving a dental implant is a straightforward one. We start by evaluating the implant site to determine whether there is enough healthy bone to support an implant. Tooth loss can lead to bone loss if left alone for long enough, so it is important to ensure the implant will be supported in the jaw. If there is not enough bone, we can always perform a bone graft to make up for lost bone.
The placement of the post is the first part of the implant procedure. To place the post, we will prep the site by drilling a small hole into the jawbone. The post will then be placed into the jawbone and capped with a low profile seal. The post is made of titanium, which is a biocompatible material, meaning the body will accept and grow into and around the post. We will allow the post to heal in the jaw for anywhere from 6 to 9 months, to ensure that it will be sturdy when we finish the implant placement process.
After healing, we will be able to place the abutment and crown onto the post. The abutment is a device whose sole function is to act as a surface for the crown to attach to. It is screwed into the post and made to stay put with a strong adhesive. The crown (or bridge/arch) is then place on the abutment and fixed with permanent dental cement.
Why get a dental implant?
Dental implants give you the full function of a natural tooth/teeth in a permanent, hassle-free dental fixture. With removable prosthetics like dentures, there are special care instructions, dietary limitations, and cleaning requirements differing from your normal oral hygiene routine. Dental implants can be treated as your normal teeth would.
The one requirement that dental implants have is that of pristine oral health. Tobacco use can easily cause an implant to fail. To ensure that your implant lasts you a long time, brush twice a day and floss at least once a day.
